Talking about your everyday life in A1.2 : pronominal verbs

  • Categories Blog
  • Date February 14, 2023

Learning French opens up many speaking opportunities for beginners. You can use verbs to talk about your everyday routine and activities, and the usage of pronominal verbs is a great way to start building your conversation skills.

Pronominal verbs or reflexives both have an object pronoun that always refers to the same thing or person as the subject.
A reflexive verb causes the subject to perform and receive the action. An additional pronoun is required since the action is given to the subject as well.
The reflexive pronoun is used in this situation.

Se réveiller (to wake up)

Je me réveille

tu te réveilles

il/elle/on se réveille

nous nous réveillons

vous vous réveillez

ils/ elles se réveillent

Note that me becomes m’, te becomes t’ and se becomes s’ before a vowel or a mute h. (je m’habille)

Here are some examples of how you can use these verbs in your everyday life:

To talk about what you do every day, you can use the verb faire. For example, you can say Je fais la vaisselle (I do the dishes), in the past tense, J’ai fait les courses (I went shopping), or future tense,  Je vais faire une promenade (I’m going for a walk).

To talk about what you’re doing right now, you can use the verb être en train de + infinitive. For example, Tu es en train d’apprendre le français? (Are you learning French?).  But you can of course use the present tense to talk about your habits.  Je me réveille le matin vers 7 heures (I wake up in the morning around 7 am.).

To talk about what you’re going to do, you can use the verb aller + infinitive. For example, Nous allons au cinéma ce soir (We’re going to the movies tonight).

By using these verbs in your everyday life, you’ll be able to learn French more easily and have more opportunities to practice your conversation skills.
