DELF/DALF exams are a major milestone on the path to getting a diploma or a requirement for certain schools for many students. But the process of preparing for it can be daunting and time-consuming. At L’école de français, we help students get their DELF/DALF exam by providing the necessary French language skills, course content and practice exams needed for success.
We believe that with the right tools and guidance, anyone can be successful at learning French and passing their DELF/DALF exam! Read on to learn more about how we guide our students through this challenging but rewarding journey. In this post, we will share how we helped two teenagers obtain their DELF A2, a requirement for starting their new studies at a hotelschool in the Netherlands.
First contact: They are close to total beginners
At L’école de français we often offer one week intensive courses where you cover one level in one week. It is an excellent course to make quick progress. We were contacted by a mother seeking help to get her daughter from total beginner to A2 in just three months. It was later taken over by a second parent for the same kind of hotelschool in a different part of the country. In order to reach the required level by the exam, we discussed taking multiple intensive courses (from A1.1 to A2.2). As soon as we published the courses, we hoped that more students would enrol in these intensive courses.Due to the limited number of students, they filled in quickly.
Faster results at an affordable price with intensive group classes
Delf is a French government exam that certifies proficiency in the French language in the Netherlands. It is only held twice a year (usually in summer and at the end of the year). The Delf exam is composed of four independent diplomas, each corresponding to a different level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Typically, Delf students aim for level A2 – the level required to enter some HORECA schools here in the Netherlands – or B2 if they plan to work or study in French. The CEFR system has levels ranging from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient). B1 is an intermediate level.
Our intensive group classes are designed to help students reach their desired level in just 1 week. We start with a placement test (possible online, or at the school) so that we can place students in the right class according to their current level.
In our classes, students will learn grammar, vocabulary, and how to apply it all in practical situations. We also focus on developing strong listening and writing skills. Speaking is another area we focus on. We always try to add “Français en action” in the intensive course so students can see how everything they have learned is put into practice in real life situations. Over the course of the week, they gain confidence and see their progress.
At the end of the week, students will have a much better understanding of the French language and be well prepared for their Delf exam. BUT we do not magic and even though you come to the class and practice, we will be realistic with you and tell you if you need private lessons to overcome your weaknesses. This is what happened to our students after they completed the A2.2. We were not sure they would pass their DELF A2 with flying colors. To master the examination requirements, we create a semi-private course just for them. They were familiar to us and we knew what needed to be done.
Le bachotage: semi-private classes
When it comes to the DELF exam, private classes are a great way to help students prepare. known as “bachotage”, these classes usually involve small groups of students working together to prepare for the exam.
Not only do private classes provide a more intimate setting for learning, but they also allow students to focus on specific areas that need improvement. In addition, private classes give students the opportunity to ask questions and get feedback from their instructor in real-time. However, this was not a typical private class. We had to focus solely on the examination.
Céline, the director and founder of L’école de français has a long history of preparing for examinations and knows how to prepare them. Their speaking presentations were practised (a lot) and she gave them key sentences to use in various contexts. As stress leads to more mistakes, they went through all the exams to feel confident and at ease. All the competencies were strictly practised with mock exams and key words and expressions were noted. For the speaking exam, we came up with a list of vocabulary, grammar summary, and “real life” sentences. In the short time we had, both of them were motivated and we did our best. If you’re looking for a more customised and immersive learning experience, private classes are definitely the way to go.
We don’t do magic, but we have a tailored structure
Our approach is based on developing a personalised study plan for each student, and providing ongoing support and guidance throughout the process.
