6 Benefits To Learning French By Reading Books

  • Categories Blog
  • Date December 31, 2022

French books can offer learners a number of benefits that other methods may not be able to provide. For one, reading books in French can help build your vocabulary in a more natural way than simply memorizing lists of words. Additionally, reading books allows you to immerse yourself in the French language, giving you a better sense for how it is actually used.

Of course, not all French books are created equal. Finding the right book for your level and liking is essential for the most out of your reading. Natacha and Céline make sure to have a great selection of books for our course “autour du livre” but we can recommend others depending on your level and what you are looking for.

If you are just starting out, look for books with parallel text in both English or Dutch and French. This will help you understand the story as you read along. You can also find books in easy French (LFF is great!) or even try children’s books.

For more advanced learners, choose books that are purely in French. This is what we do in our courses and it is also adapted to the level of course. This will challenge you to push your limits and expand your vocabulary.

No matter what level you are at, reading books in French can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. So dust off those old textbooks and give it a try!

6 Benefits To Learning French By Reading Books

If you want to learn French, reading books is a great way to improve your skills. Here are some benefits of reading books in French:

1. You can learn new vocabulary.

When you read books in French, you will come across new words and expressions that you may not be familiar with. This can help to expand your vocabulary and give you a better understanding of the language.

2. You can improve your grammar.

Reading books can also help you to improve your grammar. As you read, you will be able to see how the language is used in different contexts and this can help you to understand the rules better.

3. You can develop your reading comprehension skills.

Reading books will also help you to develop your reading comprehension skills. By reading texts that are challenging for your level, you will be able to improve your ability to understand complex ideas and concepts in French.

4. You can gain new knowledge about France and its culture.

In addition to improving your language skills, reading books about France can also give you an insight into the country’s culture and history. This can be a great way to learn more about the country and its people.

Guests often join us for a final book discussion. For example, Nadir Dendoune was online with us in 2020 to discuss Nos rêves de pauvres, or actors in 2022 when we studied Cendrillon (Pommerat). When possible, students can attend a theater performance or go to a movie screening in French.

5. Enhance self esteem and confidence.

Being able to read a foreign language can be quite empowering. It can show you that you are capable of much more than you may have thought possible and help break down any barriers that may have been holding you back.

6. Get better at listening and understanding others.

It is a proven fact that people who are bilingual have an easier time understanding others. This is because they are used to hearing and processing two different languages. When you are learning French, you are also training your brain to be better at listening and understanding others. You can also pick up on new vocabulary and grammar rules more easily when you see them in context.
